DU Men's Soccer Downs Yale 3-1
Sept. 17, 2004
New Haven, Conn. -- Jason Sourbeer and Steve Mellor eached tallied a goal and an assist to lead Duquesne past Yale, 3-1, on the opening night of the Yale Soccer Classic.
After a scorless first half, Duquesne (3-3) exploded for three goals in the second, before Andrew Dealy got Yale (0-3) on the board in the final minutes.
The game turned on Sourbeer's opening goal in the 50th minute, when he headed in a ball from Mellor. The Dukes struck again just seven minutes later, when Matt Mehler played a ball through to Scott Gibson, who sent it home for the eventual game-winner.
Yale turned up its play after the second Duquesne goal but was not able to get off many shots. Mellor's goal after a long free kick from Sourbeer into the box sealed the win for the Dukes.
The Bulldogs continued to fight back after the third goal and avoided being shut out. Dealy took the ball in the box, made a couple moves to free himself and blasted a high shot into the right side of the net.
Zach Varga recorded four saves for the Red and Blue while Geoff Hollington stopped five of DU's eight shots on goal.
Duquesne plays Brown (2-2) at noon on Sunday, September 21st followed by a Yale and Hartwick contest at 2:30 p.m. in the final day of the Classic. Brown defeated Hartwick (2-1-2) in double overtime, 2-1, earlier Friday.
