Duquesne's men's soccer team won a tough battle on Rooney Field Friday evening, defeating visiting La Salle, 1-0. The Red and Blue improve to 6-5-0 overall and 2-1-0 in the Atlantic 10 while La Salle falls to 6-3-1 overall and 2-1-0 in A-10 play.

The Dukes dominated play in the first half, outshooting the regionally ranked Explorers, 9-1 and leading in corner kicks, 5-1 but went into the lockeroom scoreless. Play evened out in a spirited second half with La Salle having a couple early scoring chances before senior Derek MacKenzie fired a direct kick into the corner of the net from 25 yards out in the 73rd minute to give the Dukes the only goal they would need.

The goal moved MacKenzie into the team scoring lead with seven points on two goals and three assists. He led the Dukes with five shots, followed by four from sophomore Noah Salsi and four from freshman Travis MacKenzie. The Dukes outshot the Explorers 16-8 for the game. Sophomore goalkeeper Zach Varga had three saves for the Red and Blue for his third shutout of the season.
