Dukes Top St. Joseph's, 4-1
Oct. 11, 2002
Philadelphia, PA -- - Duquesne (7-1-3, 2-0-1 A10) erupted for four second half goals, including three in a span of five minutes midway through the period, to defeat Saint Joseph's (6-5-0, 1-2-0) on the Finnesey Field turf on a rainy Friday evening.
After a scoreless opening half during which both squads battled the elements, Saint Joseph's Adam Duffy tallied the lone Hawk goal on a penalty kick at the 55:51 mark to briefly give the Hawks a 1-0 lead.
The Dukes answered back with three goals in a span of 4:47 midway through the second half. Sophomore Derek Mackenzie (Carnegie, PA / Chartiers Valley) tied the game when he found himself all alone in the center of the SJU penalty box and booted a lazer into the back of the net.
Just over one minute later, sophomore Trocon Refell (Houston, TX / Cypress Creek) tipped in a low crossing pass off of a corner kick for his first goal of the season which put Duquesne up for good, 2-1. MacKenzie and freshman Andrew Bell (New Marske, Redcar, England / Huntcliff Secondary) collected the assists. Bell then tallied a goal of his own at the 68:23 mark to make it a 3-1 contest.
Duquesne closed out the scoring with an insurance goal in the 83rd minute on a goal by junior Damien Pottinger (Scarborough, Ontario / Mother Teresa).
Both goaltenders battled a slick playing surface with both SJU's Kevin Dougher and DU's senior Terry McNelis (Reading, PA / Exeter Twp) recording five saves apiece.
The Dukes will battle another Philly team this weekend when they take on the Temple Owls (5-7-0, 2-2-0 A-10) at 1:00 p.m. Sunday at Temple Stadium.
