Red and Blue Outscore GW, 3-1
Oct. 15, 2004
Duquesne's men's soccer team scored twice early and coasted to a 3-1 victory over George Washington Friday evening on Rooney Field. The win moves Duquesne's record to 8-5 overall and 4-1 in Atlantic 10 play.
The Dukes struck early as senior Derek MacKenzie lofted a corner kick into the box in the fourth minute and his brother freshman Travis MacKenzie headed it into the net for his third goal of the season. Less than three minutes later, junior Scott Gibson scored his third goal of the year on a pass from Travis MacKenzie to make it 2-0.
The Dukes carried the 2-0 lead into the locker room at halftime before George Washington lit the scoreboard with a goal in the 51st minute to pull to within one. However, the Red and Blue responded in the 60th minute as sophomore Noah Salsi fired a shot past the GW goalkeeper on an assist from Gibson to end the day's scoring.
Duquesne outshot the Colonials, 14-6 with 12 different Dukes taking a shot at the net and had a 9-1 advantage in corner kicks.
The Dukes will close out the home portion of their schedule on Sunday, Oct. 17 as they host Richmond at 1:00 pm. The Department of Athletics will honor seniors Brian Kolena, Bret Krotee, Derek MacKenzie, Matt Mehler and Jason Sourbeer prior to the match.
