Dukes Blank UMass, 1-0, in Regular Season Finale

Amherst, Mass. - Duquesne University's men's soccer team, headed to their fifth consecutive Altantic 10 Championship Tournament, knocked off UMass, 1-0, in the regular season finale Sunday afternoon at the Minutemen's Rudd Field.

Junior Travis MacKenzie scored his sixth goal of the season and senior Zach Varga recorded three saves to give the Dukes an 11-6-1 record, 6-3-0 in A-10 play.

Senior Noah Salsi and sophomore John Strosser assisted on the Dukes' score, a five-yard header by MacKenzie. Varga recorded his sixth shutout of the season and 29th of his career.

The Red and Blue kept goalie Zack Simmons busy as he needed to make seven saves to keep the game within a single point. Massachusetts ends the season at 8-8-3, 2-6-1 in league play.

The 2006 A-10 tournament begins on Thursday, November 2, 2006 in Charlotte, N.C. The Dukes, the number four seed, will face the host 49ers (5) at 7:30 p.m. in the day's second quarterfinal. Richmond (3) and no. 6 Xavier meet at 5:00 p.m. Saint Louis (1) and Rhode Island (2) have byes to Friday's semifinals. The championship game is set for Sunday, Nov. 5 at 1:00 pm.
