Dukes Top Dayton, 3-1

Dayton, Ohio - Duquesne University's men's soccer team captured a 3-1 victory over the Dayton Flyers at UD's Baujan Field Friday night. The Dukes are now 11-3-2, 6-2-1 in league play. UD, which entered the game at number 30 in the College Soccer News national rankings, saw their season mark drop to 10-4-2 overall and 5-3-1 in the Atlantic 10.
Sophomore Derek Freund scored the first goal of the game in the 23rd minute, after scooping up a ball sent into the box off a defender and tapping it into the goal. Duquesne struck again just 3:37 later, after a restart. The ball was headed in by Steve Mellor, another soph., for a 2-0 lead. Senior Damien Pottinger and freshman Noah Salsi assisted on the score.
Dayton got the game within one after Jesse Faily scored the Flyers' lone goal in the 54th minute. Pottinger tacked on the insurance goal off an assist by junior Jason Sourbeer from 10 yards out in the 75th minute to clinch the win between two teams who had entered the game with identical records and a third place tie in the Atlantic 10 standings.
This week the Dukes hold the number 5 spot in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America Middle Atlantic region; Dayton is in 9th place in the NSCAA Great Lakes region.
Duquesne now heads to Cincinnati for a 1:00 p.m match Sunday, November 2nd at Xavier. The Musketeers are 4-13-1 overall and 3-6-0 in league play. The Dukes will complete their 2003 regular season with a 1:00 p.m. match on Saturday, November 8 at St. Bonaventure (2-14-1, 1-8-0 A-10).
