Dukes Shut Out Xavier, 3-0
Nov. 2, 2003
Cincinnati, Ohio - Duquesne University's men's soccer team handed Xavier a 3-0 defeat on Sunday afternoon at the Xavier University Soccer Complex. The win, which raises DU's record to 12-3-2 overall and 7-2-1 in the A-10, clinches the Dukes return to the Atlantic 10 championshuip tournament. The Musketeers fall to 3-7-0 in the Atlantic 10 and 4-14-1 overall.
The Dukes got on the board in the 12th minute of the match as they worked the ball up the right side of the field. Sophomore Derek Freund fed it to classmate Steve Mellor near the corner of the penalty box. Mellor crossed the ball to senior Damien Pottinger who blasted the ball into the net for his 11th goal of the season.
Mellor tallied the next DU goal, taking advantage of a deflected shot to score. Pottinger launched a shot from the top of the box in the 63rd minute. It was deflected by a Xavier defender, and Mellor was there to blast it into the net.
With just over six minutes remaining, Scott Gibson, another sophomore, scored for Duquesne on a blast from 18 yards out. Freshman goalie Zach Varga captured five saves for his seventh shutout of the season.
Pottinger's two goals and two assists this weekend led the Dukes in their wins over the league's Ohio schools.
The Dukes complete the 2003 regular season schedule next Saturday, Nov. 8th at St. Bonaventure (2-15-1, 1-9-0 A-10). The Atlantic 10 tournament will be held the following weekend at Richmond's First Market Stadium.
