Nov. 3, 2013
Duquesne's men's soccer team improved to 8-7 overall and 3-3 in Atlantic 10 play with a 3-1 victory at Rhode Island Sunday afternoon. Chris Alescio, Isaiah Noreiga and Austin Lange scored for the Dukes, while Simon Gomez had two assists and Bobby Sutcliffe had one.
"I'm proud of the way the guys played for the entirety of the 90 minutes," said head coach Chase Brooks. "They worked extremely hard and knocked the ball around well for large portions of the game and we took our chances today well."
"We caused Rhode Island a lot of pressure and were able to capitalize and now we have to look forward to carrying this momentum back home next weekend with two extremely tough games against George Mason and VCU and we look to end the regular season on a high note."
The Dukes opened the scoring early on as Alescio headed one in off the post from a Gomez corner kick to make it 1-0 in the 12th minute for the only goal of the first half.
The Red and Blue made it 2-0 in the 65th minute as Sutcliffe chipped one over the defense and Noreiga went 1-v-1 with the keeper, beating him into the lower right corner.
DU surrendered its lone goal in the 77th minute before Gomez once again used a corner to set up a goal in the 84th minute as Lange headed it in off the underside of the crossbar.
Sam Frymier made four saves in goal for his eighth win of the season.
The Dukes return to action on Friday, Nov. 8th as they host George Mason on Senior Night at 7:00 pm on Rooney Field. The Dukes then conclude the regular season at Rooney on Sunday, Nov. 10 with a 1:00 match-up with VCU.
