Three Dukes Receive Pre-Season A-10 Awards

Duquesne University sophomore Simon Gomez (Manizales, Colombia/Alonso) has been named to the 2010 Atlantic 10 Men's Soccer Pre-Season All-Conference Team as announced today by the league office. He was one of just two sophomores on the 11-man team. In addition, freshmen Johnny Contreras (Des Plaines, Ill./Maine West) and Filip Velasevic (Toronto, Canada/Silverthorn Collegiate Inst.) were named to the A-10's All-Rookie Team.
Gomez led the Dukes and was second in the Atlantic 10 in scoring in 2010 with 22 points on eight goals and six assists. He was a 2010 NSCAA All-Region Second Team honoree, a 2010 Atlantic 10 First Team All-Conference choice and a 2010 Atlantic 10 All-Rookie Team selection. Gomez played in 17 of 18 contests for Duquesne and made 15 starts while firing 56 shots. He was a three-time Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week honoree in 2010.
Contreras comes to Duquesne after being the Sockers FC Chicago U18 Academy captain. An All-Conference and All-Area selection in high school, he was named one of the 2011 Top 20 "Players to Watch" in the Midwest Region by Top Drawer Soccer.com and also played for the US Development Academy U16 national champions.
Velasevic was recently named to the U18 Canadian National Team. He played for Erin Mills SC which won the Canadian club national championship in 2007 and was the MVP and top goal scorer at the Adidas Cup. In high school, he scored 24 goals in 30 games for the city and district champs.
The Dukes open the 2011 season on Friday, Aug. 26 as they host Niagara at 7:30 p.m. on Rooney Field.
