#DUQMSOCCER Picked Sixth in Atlantic 10 Preseason Poll
PITTSBURGH - Duquesne, which returns nine starters from last year's 9-8-1 team, was picked to finish sixth in the annual poll of Atlantic 10 coaches released today.
DU, which finished sixth last season with a 4-3-1 conference record, received 100 points.
Defending champion Saint Louis (10 first-place votes) was picked to finish first, followed by George Mason (2) and VCU (1). Dayton was picked fourth and first-year A-10 member Davidson was chosen to finish one spot ahead of the Dukes.
Duquesne did not have any players named to the preseason All-Conference or All-Rookie Teams.
"It is always neat to see the preseason polls," said second-year head coach Chase Brooks. "To see the conference has picked us 6th - which is where we finished last year - is a compliment in the fact that the other teams see us being competitive again this year. That being said, it will be up to us to prove to the rest of the conference that we deserved a higher ranking, and that is a challenge I believe our guys will happily accept. "
DU finished strong going 2-0-1 - including a home tie with George Mason and 3-0 home win over VCU - in its final three regular-season games to qualify for last year's Atlantic 10 Championship. The Dukes return a trio of 2013 A-10 All-Rookie Team members in sophomore Chris Alescio (Glenville, N.Y./ Scotia-Glenville), junior Thomas deVillardi (Vincennes, France/EA Guingamp) and junior Kadeem Pantophlet (Tiel, Netherlands/ TSU-Theole).
The top eight regular season finishers will advance to the 2014 Atlantic 10 Championship to be held at Sports Backers Stadium in Richmond, Va. on Nov. 13-16.
The Dukes open the 2014 season at Marshall on Friday, Aug. 29 at 7:00 p.m. DU's home opener is Sunday, Aug. 31 at 5:00 on Rooney Field.
