Acqui Named A-10 Co-Rookie of the Week
Sept. 26, 2016
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – VCU redshirt junior Luc Fatton was named the Atlantic 10 Conference Men’s Soccer Offensive Player of the Week, while Saint Joseph’s junior Greg O’Connell earned Defensive Player of the Week Honors. George Mason freshman Tunde Akinlosotu and Duquesne freshman Jallah Acqui were selected as the league’s Co-Rookies of the Week. The awards, announced Monday, are for games played Sept. 19-25.
Fatton acclimated himself to the 2016 Men’s Soccer season in a big way for VCU on Tuesday night. The Charlottesville, Va., native collected three goals in a six-minute span in the first half to lift the Black & Gold to a 5-1 victory over Old Dominion. The midfielder’s hat trick immediately put him in the lead on the team in the category of goals.
O’Connell, goalkeeper from Rye, N.Y., tallied 200 minutes of play, 12 saves and two shutouts this past week. He turned in his fourth shutout in five matches to lead the Hawks to a 2-0 win over Central Connecticut on Saturday evening where he made six saves, including four in the first 43 minutes. In last Tuesday’s scoreless draw with Villanova, O’Connell also made six saves, including two fingertip stops that preserved the tie.
Akinlosotu scored the game-winner in a 1-0 victory over High Point on Wednesday. The forward from Bowie, Md., scored his second career goal from 12 yards out in the 47th minute. It stood up as the game-winner and helped the Patriots pick up their first road win of the season. Akinlosotu is tied for the team lead with two goals this season.
Acqui, a forward from Upper Darby, Pa., netted the game-winner in the 93rd minute in a 1-0 overtime win at Cleveland State to help Duquesne to its third-straight win. He had two shots on goal for the week, and currently is tied for third on the team with three points in four games.
Duquesne (5-2), winner of four in a row, takes to the pitch tomorrow night at Navy (2-4-1). Game time is set for 7:00 p.m.
