Duquesne Men Swim Past Towson, 119-86

Towson, Md. - Duquesne University's men's swimming team returned to the win column with a 119-86 victory at Towson Saturday afternoon. The Dukes had five wins in the competition.

Juniors Scott Darwin (Springfield, VA / West Springfield) and Ed Wicker (Newberry, SC / Newberry), who won races Friday at La Salle, also won today, as did freshman Chris Kobela (Allentown, PA / Salisbury Township) and both 400 yard relay teams.

Kobela, the Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week, won both of the long distance freestyle races. He took the 500 with a time of 4:49.50 and grabbed the gold in the 1,000, finishing in 9:54.86.

Wicker won his second straight 50 yard freestyle race of the weekend with a time of 21.84. Darwin took first in the 200 yard backstroke at 1:55.39 (he won the 100 yard backstroke Friday). Both were part of the 400 yard freestyle relay team that won with a time of 3:13.65. The upperclassmen were joined by sophomore Ian Walsh (Slatington, PA / Parkland) and freshman Kelly McCarthy (Avon, NJ / Christian Brothers Academy).

The Dukes' 400 yard medley relay team of seniors Doug Yeager (Dallas, PA / Dallas) and Hugo Erse (Sao Paulo, Brazil / Colegio Benjamin Constant), sophomore Josh Barr (New Cumberland, PA / Cedar Cliff) and freshman Michael Ley (Pittsburgh, PA / Fox Chapel) won the meet opener at 3:36.66.
 

 

Including the wins at La Salle, DU's relay teams won all four matches this weekend.

Duquesne (6-6) hosts Denison University next Saturday, January 28, 2006 at the Towers Pool at 1:00 p.m.
