Seven Dukes Named Academic All-Conference

Seven Duquesne University swimmers were named to the Atlantic 10 Academic All-Conference teams as announced recently by the league office. Seniors Eric Bugby (Easton, PA/Notre Dame HS) and Scott Darwin (Springfield, VA/West Springfield) along with junior Ian Walsh (Slatington, PA/Parkland) were named to the men's team while seniors Melissa Johnson (Phoenix, AZ/Shadow Mountain) and Liz Yager (Strongsville, OH/Strongsville), junior Lauren Stephens (Allentown, PA/Parkland) and sophomore Katrina Streiner (Monroeville, PA/Gateway) were named to the women's team. Both the men's and women's teams led the league in honorees.

Bugby, a communication studies major, collected seven medals (3 individual, 4 relay) and set seven school records at the 2007 Atlantic 10 Championship. He won the 100-yard butterfly, finished second in the 100-yard backstroke and placed third in the 200-yard butterfly.

Darwin earns his third Atlantic 10 Academic All-Conference honor. An environmental science management major, he earned six medals (2 individual, 4 relay) and set five school records at the 2007 Atlantic 10 Championship.

Walsh helped lead the Dukes to a first place Atlantic 10 finish in the 400 freestyle relay with a school record time of 3:02.15 and was a member of the A-10 Championship silver medalist team in the 800 free relay with a school record time of 6:46.78. He is working toward a degree in physical therapy.

Johnson captured the gold medal in the 100-yard freestyle at the Atlantic 10 Championship with a school-record time of 51.59. In addition, the history major finished second and set school records in the 200-yard freestyle and 200-yard individual medley events at A-10's.

Yager won the gold medal at A-10's in the 1,650-yard freestyle with a time of 17:20.83 and set a school record in the 1,000 free in 10:28.48. She finished third in school record time in the 500-yard freestyle at A-10's and helped lead the 800 free relay to a third place finish. Yager is a nursing major.

Stephens, an elementary education major, helped the Dukes place second at A-10's and set a school record in the 200-yard freestyle relay in 1:35.53. She also helped the Red and Blue finish second in the 400 free relay and fifth in the 200 medley relay at the A-10 Championship.

Streiner led DU to a second place finish at A-10's as they set a school record in the 200-yard freestyle relay in 1:35.53 and also helped the Dukes to a school-record time of 3:30.93 in the 400 free relay at the Akron Invitational. The liberal arts major also holds three additional school records.
