#DuqMTen Defeats Richmond 5-2
Feb. 2, 2014
QUICK RECAP BY SENIOR Max Rubin: The Duquesne men's tennis team took on conference rival, the Richmond Spiders last weekend. The match took place at the Dukes' home courts, Alpha Tennis and Fitness of Pittsburgh. This was the first meeting between the two teams since the 2012 Atlantic 10 Championship. In that match, the Dukes were upset by underdog Richmond 4-3. It was clear that this year's contest was certainly a grudge match of sorts.
The Dukes came out firing away in doubles as the team of Corey Robinson and Max Rubin quickly defeated Richmond's #2 doubles team. Following the quick win at #2, a hard fought battle between Dylan Trent and Jonathan Quenard of Richmond and Duquesne's Matt Slamecka and Harry Walshe went in favor of the Spiders. The team of Alex Aleman and Pete Carpenter clinched a nail-biting doubles point over an excellent Richmond #1 team of Jacob Dunbar and Ethan Dunbar 8-6.
Momentum from the doubles point carried into singles as the Dukes jumped out to an early 2-0 lead thanks Corey Robinson's 6-3, 6-2 victory over Trent. Following Robinson's lead, Rubin took down Canyon Teague 6-0, 6-2 in a timely fashion. After a 3-0 lead, Alex Aleman bounced back from a tough second set to clinch the win for Duquesne 6-4 in the third set over 5 star recruit Alex Hahn. Subsequently, Rich Robbie and Pete Carpenter fell in close straight set matches to the Dunbar brothers. Last to finish was Mehdi Mekaoui who topped off the victory with a 6-4, 4-6, 6-2 win over Noah Fenton. The Dukes avenged there A-10 loss to defeat Richmond 5-2.
