HARMAR, Pa. - The Duquesne men's tennis team opened their Atlantic 10 Conference schedule this past weekend with a 7-0 loss to Xavier at the Alpha Tennis and Fitness Center. The loss snapped DU's five match winning streak.
In doubles, the team of Ben Klaas and Rich Robbie took the first doubles match 8-3 at the #3 spot. Xavier responded quickly taking an 8-2 victory at the number one spot over Duquesne's Alex Aleman and Pete Carpenter. The deciding match came down to court two - the team of Max Rubin and Corey Robinson came up short dropping the deciding match in a heart-breaking tiebreaker 9-8 (4).
After claiming the doubles point, Xavier went on to claim six singles victories. Duquesne's Carpenter and Robinson had match points in their three set battles but were unable to secure a win for the Dukes. At the #5 spot, Rubin also had opportunities in a disappointing three set loss to Xavier's Michael Moe.
Robbie summed up the match, "We competed very well today. There was some great tennis on both sides of the spectrum and overall, this match showed us that we need to work even harder in than we are now."
The Dukes (6-2, 0-1 A-10) resume play this weekend in Olean, N.Y. against St. Bonaventure on Friday and Buffalo on Saturday.
