April 7, 2007
Pittsburgh, Pa. - Duquesne University's men's tennis team (17-10) defeated Dayton, 4-3, Saturday morning for the Dukes' third win in four matches and fifth place at the Atlantic 10 Men's Tennis Championship Tournament at Club 4 Life in Monroeville, Pa. It is the Dukes' highest finish since placing third in 2003. Duquesne had finished ninth in the 2006 tournament.
DU, the number five seed in the event, won the doubles point against the #6 Flyers and then relied on the singles games of junior Michael Ortega and freshmen Mark Maciuch and Gustavo Villares for the required three more points to clinch the match.
Maciuch finished the season with 23 singles victories which ties him for second place behind Todd Hrabak's 24 wins in 1995. Duquesne's 17 team wins is the second most in school history behind the 19-11 record from the 1998-99 campaign.
