Dukes Fall to Top Seeded Richmond, 4-1, In Semis
April 12, 2003
PITTSBURGH, PA - The fifth-seeded men's tennis team fell to top-seeded Richmond, 4-1 in the semifinals of the Atlantic 10 Championship at the Oxford Athletic Club in Monroeville, PA.
Junior Micael Lopez-Acevedo (Guaynabo, PR / Colegio Marista / Bowling Green), the men's co-player of the week entering the championship competition, continued his winning ways as he picked up the Dukes lone victory in number 2 singles with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Niki Doll. The Puerto Rican native raised his singles record to 19-8.
The match was called once Richmond achieved their fourth win at number 3 singles as Richmond earned the point when Matthew Cabana topped freshman Russell Moseley (St. Michael, Barbados / Louis Lynch Secondary), 6-0, in the third and deciding set. This stopped play in number four and five singles and number two doubles. The freshman and his sophomore brother Ryan (St. Michael, Barbados / Harrison College) each won sets to go along with Lopez-Acevedo winners.
The Dukes will take on the number 3 seed Xavier tomorrow, Sunday, April 13th at 11:00 a.m. for third place. The Musketeers lost to St. Bonaventure (No. 2) 4-2 in the day's other semifinals. The Spiders, the defending men's tennis league champions, will face the Bonnies for the 2003 title.
Duquesne is looking to post the Dukes highest finish in the Championships as they have finished fourth twice with the last being in 2000. Xavier looks to match their best finish from both the 2001 and 1996 seasons when they placed third.
