Red and Blue Finish Fall Schedule at Cornell Invite
Nov. 7, 2011
Duquesne's men's tennis team wrapped up the fall portion of its schedule Nov. 4-6 at the Cornell Invitational. Aram Abgaryan won his first two matches at Flight A singles to advance to the semifinals.
Abgaryan defeated his first opponent from Buffalo, 7-5, 6-4 and the overall top seed from Cornell, 6-3, 6-1 before falling to another Cornell competitor.
Rich Robbie went 1-1 at Flight B singles taking down his opponent from Lafayette, 6-3, 7-6 before falling to a competitor from Buffalo, 3-6, 6-0, 6-3.
In doubles play, Robbie teamed up with Alex Aleman to defeat a duo from Cornell, 8-4 at Flight B, then won 8-6 over a team from Buffalo to advance to the finals.
"I was pleased to see Aram reach another semifinal against some very good competition," head coach Rob Castille said. "Also, several guys were asked to play higher then they normally would because some teammates were either ill or injured, so I was pleased with the way they stepped up and competed."
"Overall, I feel we learned a lot as a team this fall which will help us out in the spring," Castille continued. "We are a fairly young team and it has been nice to see the team mature as well as certain guys becoming leaders. I am looking forward to the spring season and to see just how far this group of guys can go."
The Dukes return to action on Friday, Jan. 20 as they travel to Cleveland State for a 7:00 pm match.
