The Duquesne men’s tennis team opens the 2017 Fall season on Friday in Mason, Ohio for the Greater Cincinnati Intercollegiate Invitational.
Duquesne returns every player from last season’s 7-14 squad. Seniors Dimitris Stavropoulos, Adam Blasinsky and Tim Kane look to return to the #1, #2 and #4 singles positions respectively. Andrew Ong, who missed the A-10 Championship with an injury, saw time at #3, #5 and #6 singles.
The junior class of Drew Akins, Dane Bendel and Chris Corrao return beginning with them over 40 combined wins from last season.
A pair of sophomores return. Jared Isaacs led Duquesne with 23 singles wins and 13 doubles wins last season. Tyler Smith joined the team last fall after transferring from Wright Stats.
Joey Mathews and Dominic Lea join the Dukes this season.
Matthews, a three-star recruit, has been on the rise with a highest National ranking of 306. Matthews has been a consistent top performer in North Carolina, ranking #8 currently and has a Universal Tennis Rating of 11.25.
Lea, a product of Derbyshire, England, comes to the Bluff by way of North Florida. He played in nine matches for the Ospreys last season.
