March 29, 2003
Raleigh, North Carolina - Duquesne's men's and women's outdoor track and field teams completed their season opener this weekend at the Raleigh Relays hosted by North Carolina State University. The Dukes were led by freshman Gary Malinko (Old Forge, PA / Scranton Prep) who set a new school record in the 1,500 meters race with a time of 3:55.20. That broke 2002 grad Sam Shea's time of 3:58.21 which was set last spring at the West Virginia Classic.
More than 3,000 athletes representing approximately 110 teams competed at NC State's Paul H. Derr Track in this two-day event, one of the premiere outdoor track meets of the season.
The women's squad was led in the day two competition by the 4 x 800 meters relay team which finished in 10th place with a time of 9:17.43. In addition, junior Erica DaCosta (Hudson, NH / Alvirne) took 11th place in the javelin throw with a toss of 42.57 meters (138 feet, 8 inches).
And in the men's 3000 Meters Steeplechase, junior Pat McGuire (Greensburg, PA / Hempfield) took 13th place with a time of 9:25.96, just three seconds off his own school mark.
Both teams next compete in the Western Pennsylvania Invitational Championships which will be held on Saturday, April 5th at Carnegie-Mellon University in Pittsburgh.
