Agunbiade and Szecsi Combine for 36 as Women's Basketball Defeats Saint Louis 68-41

PITTSBURGH - Wumi Agunbiade and Orsi Szecsi combined for 36 points as the Duquesne women's basketball team defeated Saint Louis 68-41 in its Atlantic 10 Conference home opener. Agunbiade scored 23 and Szecsi 13. Jocelyn Floyd added six steals in 19 minutes for the Dukes who improve to 13-3 overall and 2-0 in the A-10. Desirae Ball led the Billikens (7-10,1-1 A-10) with 11 points. As a team, DU shot a season-best 50.8 percent, making 30 of 59 shots. The Dukes opened up the first half on an 18-8 run, hitting nine of its first 11 shots. DU would follow with a 12-0 run to make the score 30-8 at the under-8 media timeout. Although they went the last 5:54 without scoring, the Dukes took a 33-18 lead into halftime. Ahjah Hall's layup with 12:42 to play in the second half put Duquesne up by 21 at 43-22. Vanessa Abel's jumper with 1:17 remaining gave the Dukes its largest lead of the game, 30- points at 68-38. "It was great to see Wumi and Orsi have great game tonight," said head coach Suzie McConnell-Serio. "When they contribute - both offensively and defensively - the game is easier for everyone else and they open things up for other people." "Ahjah was a spark of the bench, scoring and defensively. Vanessa played great as well." Hall was 3-of-4 from the floor, tying her season-high with eight points. Abel was 4-of-7 for eight points. "Our players came out with a lot of energy defensively and I think that set the tone of the game." The Dukes will remain at home for a Sunday afternoon game against Temple.
