The Duquesne women's basketball team lost at Rhode Island Tuesday afternoon, 71-59 in a game that had been delayed two days due to a weather-related state of emergency in the state of Rhode Island.

Aiga Bautre led the Dukes with 18 points followed by Maria Stankevich's 11 and Nicole Sinclair 10 points.

Rhode Island took an early lead which the Dukes overcame via a three-pointer by Bautre, 15-14, with 12 minutes to play in the first half. Chrys Washington's jumper returned the lead to the Rams which they would hold throughout the opening stanza. URI had a 31-27 lead at the break.

Two free throws by Sophie Mojidi and a jumper by Pete Kleen pushed URI's edge to 35-27 to start the second half. Brittany Warren's layup at 12:02 cut the margin to 41-40. Kleen and Bautre exchanged treys before Sinclair's free throw knotted the game 44-44 with 10:04 on the clock.

Mojidi's traditional three-point play gave URI a 47-44 edge. Warren's layup eight seconds later put the score at 47-46 with 9:44 to go. Duquesne again responded after Rhode Island pushed the lead to 51-46. Two free throws by Bautre and Loui Hall's jumper tightened the margin, 51-50, with 7:16 to play. Rhody put together a 20-9 run, including eight straight free throws, to close out the game and secure the win.

Mojidi led all scorers with 27 points and tied a school record going 11-for-11 from the charity stripe. Kleen put in 13 and Audi Moses added 11 points for the Rams who are now 5-13, 3-4 in Atlantic 10 play. Katie Stailing pulled down a game-high eight rebounds.

 

 

Hall grabbed a team-high seven rebounds. Erin Crawford dished out game-highs of five assists and four steals. URI's Kleen also had five assists.

The Red and Blue (7-10, 2-4 A10) return home to play Richmond (14-3, 5-2) on Thursday, Jan. 27 at 7:05 pm in the Palumbo Center.
