Comeback Falls Short

DAYTON, Ohio - Duquesne's valiant effort in the 4th quarter came up short against Dayton on Wednesday night, as the Flyers held on for a 79-70 victory at UD Arena.
JaVonna Layfield recorded a double-double of 18 points and a game-high 17 rebounds for UD (17-4, 10-0 A-10). Jenna Burdette also scored 18 and Jayla Scaife 16.
Dayton opened the game by scoring the first eight points. They finished the 1st quarter by hitting 50 percent of their shots, building a 20-9 lead.
The Flyers would take a 17-point lead two times in the 2nd quarter. Duquesne held Dayton without a field goal for the final 2:13 to make the score 41-27 heading into halftime.
Duquesne played the 3rd quarter even, and cut the deficit to single-digits twice, the later came with 3:16 left.
Down 15 in the opening minute of the 4th quarter, the Dukes went on a 16-7 run over the next eight minutes to make it a two possession game with 57 seconds remaining. However, UD would make eight straight free throws to close out the game.
From the field, but teams shot 44 percent, but the Flyers made 88 percent (22-of-25) of their foul shots to the Dukes 57 percent (8-of-14). Dayton was able to convert 16 points off 12 Dukes turnovers.
The Dukes will return home to Pittsburgh tonight before departing for their Sunday afternoon game at Richmond (9-14, 4-6 A-10).
