PITTSBURGH - The lone senior on the Dukes, Judith Sole, hit a jumper with 38 seconds left to ice an 80-71 victory over Rhode Island on Saturday.
Nicole Jorgensen had a game-high 22 points for the Rams (3-24, 1-13 A-10).
Duquesne was on fire from behind-the-arc in the 1st quarter, making their first three attempts in the opening 90 seconds to build an early 9-2 lead. The Rams came back with an 11-2 run to take their first lead of the contest at 13-11. Three ties and three lead changes would follow as Duquesne held a 23-20 advantage at the end of the quarter.
With the Dukes ahead by one point midway through the 2nd quarter, they outscored the Rams 14-8 the rest of the way to take a 44-35 lead into halftime.
A layup by Lass gave Duquesne its first double-figure lead of the contest to start off the 3rd quarter. Omogrosso would follow with a 3-pointer to extend the lead to 14 points at 49-35 at the 7:32 mark of the quarter.
Lass' jumper at 5:42 of the 4th quarter gave Duquesne its largest lead of the game - 19 points at 71-52. However, URI would go on a 17-3 run to make it a two-possession contest with 1:23 remaining. But Sole's jumper from the left side sealed the game. She finished the contest with five points and three rebounds in 17 minutes.
For the sixth time in seven games, Duquesne shot over 46 percent, making 28-of-61 attempts. The Dukes won the game on the boards 41-35, with Paige Cannon grabbing a team-high seven.
Up next, the Dukes host Fordham (20-6, 11-2 A-10). The Rams are at Dayton on Sunday afternoon.
