OLEAN, N.Y. - St. Bonaventure's Mariah Ruff's 3-pointer at the buzzer did not fall as Duquesne battled back from a 15 point deficit to defeat St. Bonaventure 76-73 on Saturday afternoon. With the victory, the Dukes (23-6, 13-3 A-10) secured the #2 seed and a First Round bye into the Quarterfinal Round of the 2018 Atlantic 10 Championship.
Ruff led the Bonnies (8-21, 3-13 A-10) with 25 points.
The Dukes struggled in the 1st quarter, making only one field goal in the first eight minutes. By then, the Bonnies had built an 11-point lead at 15-4.
The shooting woes continued into the 2nd quarter, as the Dukes only made 27 percent of their shots, trailing by as many as 15 points. A Lass 3-pointer at the buzzer made the score 38-26 heading into halftime.
Duquesne scored as many points in the 3rd quarter as they did in the first half. A layup by Cannon at 7:15 started a 14-4 run that tied the game at 44-44. The Dukes would take their first lead of the game on Vojinovic 3-pointer with 2:12 left.
A layup by Conor Richardson at 4:08 in the 4th quarter gave Duquesne its largest lead of the contest -- seven points at 64-57. However, it is common knowledge that no lead is safe at the Reilly Center. Down five, Mckenna Maycock's 3-pointer made it a one possession game with six seconds remaining. Vojinovic was fouled immediately on the ensuing play. She made the first free throw, but the second rimmed out. Ruff grabbed the rebound, but her heave from mid-court did not go down.
Duquesne will play the winner of the #7 Saint Louis/#10 Massachusetts game on Friday, Mar. 2 at 4:30 PM. The Billikens will host the Minutewomen on Tuesday at 8PM in the First Round, which is played on campus sites.
