March 17, 2017
PHILADELPHIA - The Duquesne women's basketball team ended the 2016-17 season Friday night, falling to Drexel 70-47 in the First Round of the WNIT at the Daskalakis Athletic Center.
Back-to-back Drexel 3-pointers gave the Dragons an 11-7 lead with 5:20 left, until Szamosi's free throw with 3:02 remaining tied the score at 11-11. Drexel would regain the lead with a basket by Bailey Greenberg, but a Nina Aho layup with 1:01 to go leveled the score at 13-13 heading into the second quarter.
There were an additional two ties and five lead changes before Aho would hit a buzzer-beating 3-pointer to give the Dukes a 27-26 advantage at the half. Omogrosso led the Dukes with 11 points through two quarters, going 4 for 6 from the field and shooting 75 percent from beyond the arc.
Seven unanswered points helped Drexel find its first double-digit lead of the game--up 10 --with 5:09 to go. Curran's layup with 34 seconds remaining put Drexel ahead 49-34 to close the quarter, as the Dragons outscored the Dukes 23-7 in the 3rd.
The Dragons' largest lead of the game came off a Megan Marecic free throw--up 23 points -- with 24 seconds on the clock to close the scoring for both teams.
"Obviously, I'm disappointed with our play in the second half of the game. Drexel had great flow to their offense and made shot after shot. We did not have that flow. That's on me."
"Amadea and Bre end their careers with 89 wins, four straight postseason appearances and tremendous individual growth on the court, in the classroom and as people. They have represented in a first class manner and will be excellent alumni. We are so happy to have been a part of their life. They are always Duquesne Dukes!"
This was the first meeting between the two schools and the first for Duquesne against a Colonial Athletic Conference opponent since Delaware on Dec. 30, 2012
