Women's Basketball Defeats Cal, Pa. 81-52 in an Exhibition Game

PITTSBURGH - Four Dukes scored in double-figures led by Wumi Agunbiade's15 as the Duquesne women's basketball team defeated California University of Pennsylvania by a score of 81-52 in an exhibition game on Saturday afternoon at the Palumbo Center.
Cal's Amy Johns scored a game-high 18 points for the Vulcans who were coming off a 23-win season last year.
Nurkic, who scored all her points on 3-pointers, hit the first-of-four midway through the first half to give the Dukes an 11 point lead at 20-9. Nurkic closed out the first half scoring from downtown to put Duquesne up by 28 at 44-16 going into halftime.
A Szecsi jumper at 18:50 made the score 48-16 and gave the Dukes its largest lead of the game at 32 points.
Cal got the deficit down to 19 points with 6:59 to play, but the Dukes would close the game on a 15-5 run to finish the Vulcans with a final score of 81-52.
"We shot the ball well today," said head coach Suzie McConnell-Serio. "Defensively we did some nice things."
The Dukes out-rebounded the Vulcans 37-to-26 with Abel having a game-high eight and Szecsi and Agunbiade five apiece.
"Certain combinations played well together and we were able to score in transition," added Coach Serio.
Duquesne scored 20 points off of 16 Cal turnovers.
The regular season begins on Friday, Nov. 11 when the Dukes travel to two-time defending Northeast Conference champion Saint Francis, Pa. Tipoff time at DeGol Arena is 7:00 p.m.
