Women's Basketball Defeats California, Pa. 72-50 in Exhibition Game

PITTSBURGH - The Duquesne women's basketball team defeated California University of Pennsylvania 72-50 in the team's only exhibition game of the season on Thursday night.

April Robinson and Belma Nurkic scored 15 points each while Orsi Szecsi and Wumi Agunbiade added 12 and 10 points respectively. Jose-Ann Johnson had a team-high five rebounds for the Dukes.

Cal's Ashley Hines, Jr. recorded a double-double of game-highs 16 points and 12 rebounds for the Vulcans.

The Dukes started out missing four of its first five shots as they fell behind by three points early on in the first half. A 14-3 run would give DU an eight point lead at 16-8 after a Jocelyn Floyd layup at the midway point of the half. Raegan Moore's layup would extend the lead to 11 points at 27-16 with 2:40 left. Duquesne would take a 29-20 lead into halftime.

The Vulcans would get within six points at the 15:31 mark of the second half on a 3-pointer by Emma Mahady, but Duquesne would answer with a 15-4 run, taking a 53-36 lead capped by a Szecsi layup with 8:08 remaining. A Nurkic layup with 3:15 remaining put the Dukes up by 21 points at 63-42. The Duquesne lead reached 25 points three times - the last after a Stasia King layup inside the final minute.

After shooting 45.8 percent (11-24) in the first half, the Dukes made 68 percent from the floor in the second half (17-25). Duquesne made 71.4 percent of its foul shots (10-14) and was 37.5 percent (6-16) from beyond the arc.

The regular season begins in eight days - Fri. Nov. 9th when Duquesne hosts Liberty in the first round of the Preseason WNIT at 7:00 p.m.
