Nov. 24, 2013
MOREHEAD, Ky. - Orsi Szecsi recorded the first Duquesne women's basketball triple-double in almost 19 years in the Dukes' 83-35 victory over Morehead State on Sunday afternoon. With the win, Duquesne improves to 4-2 on the season.
Szecsi finished the game with 16 points, 12 rebounds and a career-high 10 assists. Jose-Ann Johnson recorded her first-ever double-double with career-highs 14 points and 10 rebounds. Raegan Moore led all scorers with 21 points.
Morehead State (4-3) did not have any players score in double-figures. Monique Bunk and Almesha Jones were the Eagles' leading scorers with seven points each.
Duquesne had a fast start, scoring the game's first 12 points in just 2:25. An April Robinson jumper at the midway point of the half put Duquesne up by 21 points at 29-8. Moore's layup with 57 seconds left in the half made the Dukes a +30 and a pair of Angela Heintz foul shots capped the 1st half scoring with Duquesne leading 44-12.
The Duquesne defense held Morehead State to just four field goals in the first half on 26 attempts (15.4 percent). The Dukes had three blocks - one each by Johnson, Moore and Amadea Szamosi.
Robinson's 3-pointer put the Dukes over the half-century mark with 17:54 remaining in the 2nd half. Szecsi's foul shots just before the first media timeout in the half gave Duquesne a 40-point lead at 55-15. The Dukes would have a lead as high as 51 points twice - on Kyasia Duling's jumper with 3:03 left (Szecsi's assisted, completing the triple-double) and after a Szecsi connected on her fifth field goal of the game with 42 seconds remaining.
Bunk's 3-pointer with 21 seconds to play closed out the scoring with the Dukes winning 83-35.
"I am very pleased with how Orsi and Jose-Ann played today," said head coach Dan Burt. "We established an inside game early and that help us set the pace of the game."
The Dukes outscored the Eagles 46-16 in the paint and outrebounded MSU 43-27.
"This was a good win for us, Morehead State had momentum coming into today's game, winning two in a row. We are going enjoy this tonight and then get ready for Tuesday's game at Miami," added Burt.
Duquesne will play Miami University on Tuesday night at 7:00 p.m.
