DU Women End 2004 With 88-80 Win Over Ohio

Junior Aiga Bautre (Riga, Latvia) led all scorers with a career-best 29 points to pace Duquesne to an 88-80 women's basketball victory over visiting Ohio in a non-conference bout Friday afternoon at the Palumbo Center. Bautre went a perfect 10-10 from the free throw line.
Junior Nicole Sinclair (Indiana, Pa./Indiana) posted her sixth double-double with 12 points and a game-best 16 rebounds while sophomore Loui Hall (Masontown, Pa./Albert Gallatin) added 19 points and freshman Jocelyn Chandler (Uniontown, Pa./Uniontown) chipped in a personal-best 11 markers.
Ohio was led by Bridgeville, Pa. native Lauren Revesz with 18 points off the bench. Erin Isbell grabbed a team-high 10 boards.
The win puts the Dukes at 5-5 while the Bobcats fall to 4-7.
Duquesne used an early 8-0 run to go up 11-4 at 15:09 and the teams then traded baskets until Sinclair hit the second of two free throws for an 18-10 lead at 12:19. Revesz's three capped a 7-0 Bobcat drive to give the visitors a 25-24 edge at 7:05. Chandler's jumper broke a three-minute Dukes' scoring drought and put DU up, 26-25. A jumper by Bautre increased the lead to 28-25 with 5:00 on the clock. OU's Ciara Iglehart's lay-up at 1:13 put Ohio up 31-30. Bautre closed the half's scoring hitting both free throws for the 32-31 Duquesne edge at the break.
The second half was closely played and physical on both sides as eight ties and lead changes occurred over the second stanza. The half began with three ties with the last at 38-38 after a Bautre jumper. Ohio went on a 6-2 drive to take a 44-40 edge at 15:47, but Sinclair would hit two from the charity stripe and Bautre would net a jumper at 15:00 en route to an 8-2 Duquesne drive that gave the Dukes a 48-46 lead at 14:34. The game stayed within a three-point reach and would see a 54-54 tie at 12:19 after a Revesz three-point goal. Chandler answered with a trey of her own for a 57-54 lead, but the Bobcats sprang to a 10-2 drive and grabbed a 64-59 lead at 10:25. Ohio led 66-61 at 9:10.
The feisty Dukes would not give up. Hall's three-point goal at 6:27 brought the Dukes to within one, 71-70. Brittany Warren scored off an Ohio turnover to give the Dukes a 72-71 edge at 5:03. Rebecca Bonasso's jumper put the Dukes up 74-71, but Tiffany Byrd's three pointer knotted the game 74-74 at 3:26. Duquesne gained an 81-76 edge via a 7-2 run and would not let OU closer than within three, 81-78, with 29 seconds left. The Dukes ended the contest hitting 7-8 from the charity stripe to secure the win.
