WORCESTER, United Kingdom - Former Duquesne women's basketball forward Diana Voynova ('11) led Team Northumbria to its first-ever National Cup Championship on Sunday after a thrilling 66-64 victory over Cardiff Archers. Voynova, who is the team's captain, scored 16 points and pulled down a game-high 18 rebounds.
"It is a true blessing to be playing basketball at this level," said Voynova." This is my third year playing professionally after graduating from Duquesne and I can say my basketball career in Europe has been very successful this far and Duquesne is a big part of that."
Voynova added, "I learned a lot as a player during my time as a Duke. Playing in the National Cup Final this past Sunday it felt a bit like a deja-vu to me as I was playing against former St. Bonaventure player Jessica Jenkins."
"I also want to congratulate Coach Dan Burt on for the successful season the team is having this far," said Voynova. Burt recruited Voynova to Duquesne from Jefferson College in Hillsboro, Missouri.
The Pernik, Bulgaria native played two seasons for the Dukes. She graduated in May 2011 with an international business degree.
