April 24, 2017

PITTSBURGH - Duquesne head women's basketball coach Dan Burt announced that Laia Sole will transfer from the University of Maine and be part of the women's basketball program this fall. Solé will sit out the 2017-18 season under NCAA transfer rule and will be eligible to play during the 2018-19 season.

"Laia brings impressive Division I and FIBA credentials to our program," said Burt. "On a University of Maine team that went to the American East Championship game and won 19 regular season games, Laia was the focal point in the paint. She has an outstanding back-to-the-basket game and is a proven Division I scorer. The team and staff really enjoyed Laia's official visit to Duquesne, she will fit well with our high values of emphasizing a strong education in the classroom and on the court."

A 6-2 forward, Solé was the America East Sixth Player of the Year and a member of the AE All-Rookie team. Playing in all 34 of the Black Bears' games, Solé averaged 9.4 points per game (11.3 in AE play) and shot 46.6 percent from the field.

A four-star recruit by Blue Star Europe, Solé has a bevy of international experience. Most recently, she led Spain to a silver medal at the FIBA U18 Women's European Championship in Sopron, Hungary and a bronze medal at the 2016 FIBA 3x3 Team at World Championships in Guangzhou, China. Additionally, Solé was on the bronze medal winning 3x3 team at the U18 Spanish Championship. Solé also played on Spain's U16 team that won bronze at the 2014 European Championship in Debrecen, Hungary.

Solé also played club ball for Segle XXI in the Catalan Basketball Federation. During the 2015-16 season, she averaged 12.8 points per game.

"I chose Duquesne because I love the style of game that the team plays, the winning mentality that the team has and the family spirit between coaches and players," said Solé. "I am really excited to be part of a winning and competitive program, the Duquesne family."

Laia will join her sister Judith on the team, becoming the first-ever sibling duo in program history.
