PITTSBURGH - Dan Burt, the top assistant for the Duquesne women's basketball program for the past six years, has been named head coach of the Dukes announced Director of Athletics Greg Amodio today.

Burt, 42, a native of nearby Washington, Pa., reached an agreement with Duquesne late Friday evening.

The 10th head coach in the 40 year history of the Duquesne women's program, Burt will be formally introduced on Monday afternoon.

"Dan Burt is the perfect choice to lead our women's basketball program. He has demonstrated a strong commitment to the university and our student-athletes," said Amodio. "I expect the program to grow under his leadership and compete for the Atlantic 10 Conference championship annually. The addition of Dan ensures that everything is in place for the continued success of Duquesne women's basketball."

"I am very humbled and excited to be the next head coach for the Duquesne University women's basketball team," said Burt. "I have dreamed of this moment for the last 16 years and today that dream came true. I would like to thank President Dougherty, Greg Amodio, the Duquesne administration, my family, the players, the previous coaching staff and everybody else I have worked with for their support. I look forward to the challenge of taking this program to the next level."

In six seasons, Burt helped the Dukes to 123 victories and five WNIT appearances. This past season's team tied the program record with 24 wins and recorded an all-time-best 11 Atlantic 10 Conference victories. He helped recruit and coach nine players who earned all-conference honors a total of 15 times.

Recognized as one of the country's top recruiters, Burt helped assemble a 2011 class that was ranked 38th in the nation by ESPN HoopGurlz and 47th by Blue Star Basketball. Duquesne's class of 2013 was named the 39th-best in the nation by Blue Star Basketball.

Prior to Duquesne, Burt served as an assistant at Bucknell, UNC Wilmington and West Virginia.

A graduate of Trinity High School, Burt played collegiately at West Liberty where he earned a degree in physical education.

Burt and his wife Kata have two sons - Soma (8) and Milan (2).
