Germany Too Much for Hungary
June 16, 2011
SOPRON, Hungary - The 16th and final spot was at stake for the 2011 EuroBasket Women's Championship in a two-legged tie contest between Germany and Hungary featuring Duquesne guard/forward Orsi Szecsi.
The winner was determined by the sum of scores of a two-game series which was played June 12th and June 15th.
Germany gained the upper hand with a 59-53 victory over Hungary in the first leg of the Additional Qualifying Round Final. With the contest tied at 48-48 with 7:47 remaining in regulation, Hungary went scoreless over the next 6:09 and did not record a field goal until the 1:02 mark.
Hungary needed to win the second game by at least seven points to advance. Things looked good early on for the Hungarians, as they took a 15-7 lead - and a two-point aggregate lead - in the first quarter. Hungary's largest lead would come at the 7:02 mark of the second quarter as a Diana Fürész layup gave them a 24-15 lead.
Germany would close out the quarter on an 18-9 run to tie the score at 33-33 going into halftime.
Hungary would regain the lead early in the third quarter at 37-35, but a 14-3 German run put them up 49-40 at the end of quarter.
The closest Hungary would get was eight points late in the fourth quarter.
Germany advances via the 17-point victory on aggregate and will play Spain in the first round of the 2011 EuroBasket Women's Championship which is being held at the Spodek Arena in Katowice, Poland on June 18th.
Szecsi finished the event averaging 5.5 points per game and shot an impressive 11-for-22 from the floor.
