DUKES OPEN WITH LEHIGH: Coming off of back-to-back 20-win seasons and WNIT berths, the Duquesne women's basketball team will open is 2010-11 season at home against Lehigh on Friday night at the new-look A.J. Palumbo Center. Tipoff is scheduled for 8:00 p.m.
ABOUT LEHIGH: Coming off two consecutive Patriot League titles and NCAA Championship appearances ... finished 29-4 overall and 13-1 in conference play last season ... was an impressive 16-0 at home ... only one of 12 NCAA teams to record an unblemished home record.
ABOUT DUQUESNE: Head coach Suzie McConnell-Serio is 3-0 in season openers ... a pair of highly recruited freshmen will make their Duquesne debut in forward Wumi Agunbiade and guard/forward Orsi Szecsi ... the duo was ranked 47th best in the nation by Blue Star Basketball ... returns three starters from last season's 20-12 team in senior forward Samantha Pollino, junior guard Alex Gensler and junior point guard Vanessa Abel ... returning senior guard Kelly Britcher was one of the A-10's best sixth-man last season.
WARMING UP WITH WESLEYAN: Last Saturday, Duquesne played its only exhibition game of the season - a 93-53 win over West Virginia Wesleyan ... Pollino recorded a double-double of 16 points and 13 rebounds ... Agunbiade added 16 points ... Gensler scored 15 and Abel 12.
LAST TIME AGAINST LEHIGH: Lehigh defeated Duquesne 62-52 on Dec. 7, 2009 at Stabler Arena ... Duquesne missed its first 17 shots and did not score until 12:42 of the first half ... DU lead at halftime 23-20 ... LU started the second half on an 18-4 run ... a 20-11 run got Duquesne within two points at 47-45 with 6:08 left ... the Dukes would only get two more field goals in the final four minutes.
DUKES IN SEASON OPENERS: Friday marks the 38th all-time season opener for the Duquesne women's basketball team. The first-ever game for the program was Dec. 12, 1973 at Seton Hill. The Dukes have won seven straight home openers at Palumbo.
AWAY FROM HOME: Friday night's game will be the last home event for exactly one month ... the Dukes will go on a six-game road trip beginning Nov. 17 at West Virginia ... DU will also face Miami, Ohio (Nov. 24), Robert Morris (Nov. 28), Akron (Dec. 1), Canisius (Dec. 4) and Buffalo (Dec. 6) ... the road trip will cover four states (Pennsylvania, Ohio, West Virginia and New York) and four conference (Big East, Northeast, MAAC and MAC) ... this is the longest time away from home since the Dukes were on the road for seven straight game from Nov. 30 - Dec 29, 2001.
