@DuqBowling Wins Program's First Championship
Feb. 13, 2017
PITTSBURGH - The first-year Duquesne bowling program put together its finest showing of the season, winning the Golden Bear Invitational at Berks Lanes in Sinking Spring, Pa. over the weekend. The Dukes, who finished 10-3, handed No. 16 Adelphi its only two losses of the weekend. Two of DU’s three defeats came by a total of 15 pins.
Duquesne defeated Chestnut Hill in their final match of qualifying on Sunday to earn the No. 4 seed in the Championship bracket. The Dukes faced top-seeded Adelphi, the nation’s No. 16-ranked team, in the opening round. Duquesne, who defeated Adelphi 913-907 in a match on Saturday, jumped out to 3-0 lead. Adelphi fought back winning game 4 but the Dukes responded and won game 5 to move-on to the Championship match.
DU’s opponent, No. 20 Franklin Pierce, advanced by defeating Morgan State 4-1 in its first round match. Duquesne got off to a 2-0 lead, but had costly opens in their next three games and Franklin Pierce took advantage. Down 3-2 Duquesne threw its first clean game of the tournament, shooting a 213 to tie up the match 3-3. The Dukes went on to win the final game 174-142 for the team’s first championship.
“It’s pretty remarkable what this team has accomplished in such a short amount of time,” said Duquesne head coach Jody Fetterhoff. “It’s a testament to the trust and belief they have in each other and their abilities. All six bowlers led the team at one point in this tournament. They stayed together, focusing on their game plan and everyone stepped-up when they needed to. It’s a big win for this program and a huge confidence boost as we prepare for our next NEC Conference event in New Jersey February 25-26.”
