Oct. 16, 2017
PITTSBURGH - The 25th-ranked Duquesne women's bowling team opened the season with a solid performance at the Bud Whitman Baker/Traditional in Reading, Pa. over the weekend, finishing sixth of 18 teams in Sunday's traditional matches (3-2).
Freshmen Olivia Farwell and Sarah Kirkpatrick led the team to a 3-2 record in Saturday's Baker matches. Farwell posted the second-highest Baker frame average among all bowlers at 21.86 in earning a spot on the all-tournament team. Kirkpatrick was second on the team with a 19.15 average for 44 frames. The Dukes set a team record for a five-game Baker match in a 1003-909 win over #15 Adelphi.
The team broke another record with a 1002 pin total in its first game on Sunday - a 1002-787 win over Roberts Wesleyan. Sophomore Kelsey Hackbart finished eighth overall with a 204.8 average. Falwell also averaged over 200 at 200.6 in finishing 13th. Kirkpatrick averaged 196.25 for four games. The team averaged 188.88 for the weekend.
"It was great to see the two freshmen, Oliva and Sarah, shine this weekend," said head coach Jody Fetterhoff. "They were solid both days and really stepped up to lead this team when we needed them. Although we struggled a bit in our last game on Sunday - which unfortunately dropped us down to sixth place - the team was only 66 pins from third. It was a good start to our season and we look to improve as we have a couple days in practice to prepare for our next tournament this weekend in New Orleans."
