Nov. 5, 2017
PITTSBURGH - No. 25 Duquesne led from start to finish in posting an impressive win at the Virginia Union Invitational in Midlothian, Va. over the weekend.
The Dukes averaged 189.1 - just over 16 pins better than the nearest competitor - in posting a 9,453 total (4,686 Baker and 4,767 Traditional) on Friday and Saturday. DU set a team Baker record in a 1049-803 win over Virginia Union on Friday, and followed that with a team traditional game record of 1047, in a 1047-737 win over Coppin State on Saturday.
Cassidy Powers (198.8), Kelsey Hackbart (193.8) and Megan Cook (193.8) finished fourth and tied for fifth overall. Freshman Olivia Farwell's 190.6 average ranked eighth overall. Powers and Hackbart earned spots on the All-Tournament Team.
Duquesne, seeded No. 1 for the Championship round, defeated second-seed Saint Peter's, No. 10 Chowan and No. 3 Mount Aloysius to wrap up the title on Sunday. Duquesne jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the final match, only to see Mt. Aloysius answer with three-straight wins to force a game seven. The teams went back and forth in the final game before Cook and freshman Sarah Kirkpatrick both posted strikes in the 6th and 7th frames to put the Dukes ahead for good.
DU finished the three-day event 12-1 (5-0 Baker, 4-1 Traditional and 3-0 Championship), with the lone loss coming by eight pins to Virginia State in a traditional match on Saturday.
"It was a great weekend as the team led from start to finish," said head coach Jody Fetterhoff. We've never been in that position before, so it was great to see people step up and throw great shots when we needed them."
