Lacrosse Wins Season Opener, 20-6 Over Visiting St. Francis

Duquesne's lacrosse team opened the 2013 season with a decisive, 20-6 victory over visiting St. Francis Friday evening on Rooney Field. Sophomore Amanda Kidder led the Dukes with five goals and an assist while Clare Hurley added three goals and Morgan Matz chipped in two goals and a team-high five assists. Haley Marafioti added two goals and three assists and Lib Lowry posted two goals and two assists.
After a scoreless first four-plus minutes, Hurley scored the game's first goal off a free position shot. That led to a spree of five DU goals in a span of a minute and 13 seconds en route to a 10-0 lead and a 12-2 halftime advantage.
The Red and Blue outscored the Red Flash, 8-4 in the second half which had a running clock in effect for most of the half. On the night, DU outshot SFU, 35-14, had a 17-10 draw control advantage and led in ground balls, 11-5.
Kristen Gregory made her first career start in goal and tallied five assists.
The Dukes return to action on Saturday, Feb. 23 as they travel to Marquette for a noon contest.
