Dukes Drop Lacrosse Opener At Cal, 13-11
March 2, 2003
Berkeley, California - Duquesne's women's lacrosse team dropped their season opener to California - Berkeley, 13-11, Sunday afternoon at Cal's Memorial Stadium.
Sophomore Ginger Flocco (Plymouth Meeting, Pa. / Plymouth-Whitemarsh) paced the Red and Blue with four goals and two assists while freshman Kelly Mulford (Lutherville, Md. / Maryvale Prep) added four goals. Sophomore Laura App (Silver Spring, Md./Our Lady of Good Council) added a goal and an assist and senior Lauren Mincher (Annapolis, Md. / Annapolis) had two assists.
The Dukes got off to a quick start as Mulford put Duquesne on the board with her first of four goals on a feed from Mincher at the 27:59 mark. Junior Becca West (Cicero, NY / Cicero-North Syracuse) followed that with an unassisted score just 1:44 later to give the Dukes a quick 2-0 lead.
Cal's Colleen O'Mara sparked the Golden Bears' offense by finding the back of Duquesne's net for Cal's first tally of the afternoon to cut the Dukes' lead in half. A flurry of goals in the next 30 seconds resulted in a 3-2 Duquesne lead as Mulford tallied a goal just 13 seconds later with Flocco assisting while O'Mara followed that up with her own score just 20 seconds after that.
Mulford and Flocco teamed up for another marker to up the lead to 4-2 midway through the first half. O'Mara, however, added Cal's third goal of the afternoon in what would end up being one of four consecutive scores in the next six minutes which gave the Golden Bears the 6-4 lead. In that string of consecutive goals, O'Mara added her fourth of the afternoon, Edwards her second and Molly Brady her first. The Dukes cut the lead to 6-5 on Flocco's first tally on a feed from Mincher before Cal responded with three of the next four markers (DU's score was Flocco's second of the day at the 2:40 mark) to take a 9-6 lead into the break.
The second half was much more defensive-minded as three yellow cards were issued and only nine goals scored between the two clubs. Brady tallied the first two scores of the second stanza, both free position goals to give the Golden Bears a commanding 11-6 advantage. But the Dukes weren't done as they rallied off two straight goals from App and West to cut the Cal lead to 11-8. Cal's Julianne Wu posted her third goal of the year with 20:16 to play, before both teams went on a seven-minute scoring drought. Edwards broke that streak with her fifth goal at the 12:59 mark to put the Cal on top, 13-8.
The Dukes then surged back scoring three straight goals to cut the lead to two with 3:21 left. Flocco tallied two back-to-back scores and senior Christi Madden (Cherry Hill, N.J. / Cherry Hill East) posted one of her own. Now only up by two goals, Cal awoke from its slumber just in time to hold off the Duquesne charge and claim the 13-11 victory. This was Cal's (2-1) highest offensive output of the season.
Sophomore Sarah Pacini (Baldwinsville, N.Y. / C.W. Baker / Vanderbilt) started in goal for the Red and Blue and registered eight saves. She was replaced by fellow soph Shelley Rank at the 40 minute mark. Rank stopped five of the Golden Bears last seven shots on goal.
The Dukes (0-1) continue their spring schedule in the Golden State as they will face Denver on Monday afternoon at Cal's Memorial Stadium. The Pioneers' record is 1-0 prior to today's matchup at Stanford.
