Dukes Start Off 2-0

PITTSBUGH, PA - Kathleen McNish's game-high nine points led Duquesne to a 20-15 win over Monmouth at Cupples Stadium Friday afternoon. The Dukes (2-0) scored the first three goals of the game and held the lead the rest of the way as they handed the Hawks (2-1) their first loss this season.
Ashley Wood scored the first of her game-best five goals just 1:26 into the first half. McNish and Sarah Cates followed with tallies before Monmouth got on the board at 21:21 of the first half.
Monmouth's Megan Nutter's goal tied the score at four apiece at the 11:02 mark, but two goals each from Wood and Meghan Frederick and one from Becky Greene had the Red & Blue up 9-7 at the half.
In the second stanza, the Dukes scored the first five goals of the half. Courtney Tamasitis started the rally followed by goals from Sarah Carson, Wood's fourth, Frederick's third and Janna Faulkner to put the Dukes up 14-7
MU got as close as three goals to narrow the gap to 15-12 with 16:45 to play, but three quick scores by Frederick, McNish and Tamasitis widened the gap to 18-12 with just over 12 minutes to play.
Caitlin Carducci recorded her second win in as many games for DU. She had 10 saves, giving up only nine goals in 46-plus minutes of action.
The Dukes outshot the Hawks by a 46-32 margin. DU also led in ground balls (19-14) and draw controls (25-12).
Duquesne takes to the Cupples Stadium field Sunday at noon hosting Vanderbilt.
