Kaelin Shaw scored five goals in leading the Duquesne women's lacrosse team to an 11-10 victory over Detroit Monday afternoon on Rooney Field.

Jill Vacanti scored a hat trick and added an assist, while Sarah Kollhoff (2) and Kaitlyn DeHaven (1) scored their first goals of the season for the Dukes. Tess Drotar had a game-high four draw controls.  

Detroit's Kaitlyn Wandelt led the Titans, scoring six goals.

1st Half: Vacanti opened the game scoring back-to-back goals, giving the Dukes a 2-0 lead by the 23:23 mark. Detroit would respond by scoring five unanswered goals, taking a 5-2 lead with 7:38 remaining. A Vacanti free position goal with 1:10 put the score at 5-3 heading into halftime.

2nd Half: Kollhoff's goal at 25:01 brought Duquesne within one point at 5-4, but UDM would strike again at 23:46 to preserve its lead at 6-4 with 23:46 remaining. The teams exchanged goals until another Kollhoff goal leveled the score at 7-7 with 13:53. Shaw's goal with 9:05 left put the Dukes ahead for good at 9-8. Detroit had a chance to tie the game after scoring with 58 seconds remaining and winning the ensuing draw control, however Brittany Fenney stepped out of bounds with 42 seconds left, sealing the Dukes victory.

"I'm really happy that they were able to pull it together in the end. We got our first win out of the way this season, so I'm really happy they came together in the second half. As far as it being my first win as head coach, I definitely have the game ball and took a moment for myself." 

The Dukes head to Buffalo, N.Y. to face Canisius (3-4) on Wednesday, with the game set for 6 p.m.
