Ginger Flocco led the Dukes with three goals while Sarah Pacini went the distance in goal to record 15 saves on 34 shots. Courtney Flynn led the Wildcats with three goals and added an assist.
Northwestern opened the game strong netting three goals on three shots to take a 3-0 lead as 27:41 remained in the first frame. Flocco's unassisted score at 25:31 put the Dukes on the board, but the Wildcats extended their lead to a 6-1 edge at the 19:19 mark. Flocco's free position goal and Becca West's unassisted goal got the Dukes within a 3-6 reach at 11:28 before 10 minutes of scoreless play. Jenny Bush found the back of the cage at 1:30 for the 6-3 lead at the break.
The Wildcats upped their lead to a 10-3 edge with scores at 22:26, 17:49 and 8:30 before Carrie Watkins' give to Flocco at 6:49 ended the Dukes' scoreless drought for a 4-10 reach. It was a goalkeeper's game afterward with key stops from Pacini and Northwestern's Ashley Gersuk.
The Dukes collected 30 groundballs to Northwestern's 27, but the Wildcats won on the draw taking 11 to the Dukes' six.
Duquesne hits the road again for a two-game Atlantic 10 series to open league play this weekend. The Dukes face George Washington on Saturday March 15 and head to Richmond on Sunday March 16. Both contests begin at noon.
