Dukes Take Saint Mary's 19-2

The Duquesne women's lacrosse team upped its record to 5-2 on the season taking a 19-2 victory over visiting Saint Mary's College (CA) in a non-conference bout Monday afternoon on Rooney Field. It was the Dukes' home opener. Kelly Mulford led the Red & Blue with five goals, including a 2-2 effort on free position shots, to lead the game. Also hitting multiple goals were Ginger Flocco, Ashley Wood and Laura App with three while Caroline Gallagher added two scores. Mulford, Flocco and Stacie Pollock each had two assists.
Molly Wagner and Alex Oetken scored for the Gaels. Keeper Katie Augustine had 14 saves and faced 33 shots.
Laura App opened the game's scoring with a feed from Flocco just :38 into play. Wood notched her first of two free position goals at 2:43 before the Gael's Oetken put the visitor on the board with an unassisted goal 5:48 into the game. Mulford hit four the Dukes' next seven goals with Flocco netting the other three to give Duquesne a 9-1 edge with 12 minutes to go. Wagner would find the back of the game for Saint Mary's in the 22nd minute, but the Gaels would not hit pay dirt again. Duquesne held a 12-2 edge at the intermission.
The second frame was all Duquesne as the host hit the back of the cage eight times for the 19-2 final. The Dukes out-shot the Gaels 19-3 in the second frame alone and 47-9 for the contest.
Duquesne held a 23-13 edge in ground balls and a 15-8 margin in draw controls. Duquesne also forced eight SMC turnovers on the day.
The Dukes improve to 5-2 overall while SMC drops to 1-7 on the season.
Duquesne opens Atlantic 10 play on Friday, April 1, as they host St. Bonaventure at 3:00 pm.
