UMass Ends Dukes' Winning Streak, 12-11

Amherst, Mass. - The University of Massachusetts ended their six-game losing streak and Duquesne's six-game winning streak with a 12-11 win over the Dukes Sunday afternoon at Garber Field. Juniors Laura App and Ginger Flocco and sophomore Kelly Mulford each scored three goals. Flocco, an Inside Lacrosse honorable mention player the last two weeks, added two assists for her second straight five-point game.
The win puts the Dukes' season record at 7-3, 2-1 in Atlantic 10 play. UMass is 2-6, 1-0 in league competition.
Duquesne pulled even at 2-2 in the 12th minute of the opening period on goals by App and Flocco. UMass' Tracey Drown put the Minutewomen back on top just over a minute later before two goals by Mulford and one each by freshman Courtney Tamasitis, Flocco and App notched DU ahead 7-4 with less than eight minutes remaining in the period. Junior Sarah Pacini recorded six saves in the opening frame which enabled DU to gain the 7-5 halftime edge.
UMass scored four straight in the first 15 minutes of the second half to pull ahead 9-7. Goals by App and Mulford tied the game 9-9 with 12:56 remaining. Sophomore Meredith Williams' shot tied the game at 10-10 at the 8:51 mark. After another UM score, the Dukes again came back, this time on Flocco's free position shot, to tie the game 10-10 with 6:13 left. Kerri Connerty's third goal at 5:41 gave the Minutewomen a 12-11 lead that, this time, Duquesne was unable to close.
Flocco, who paces the Dukes in most offensive categories (i.e., goals, assists, points, gamewinners, ground balls and caused turnovers), continues to lead the Atlantic 10 Conference with 3.60 goals per game and is second with 5.10 points per game.
The Dukes return home for a non-conference matchup with Stony Brook (3-3, 0-1 America East) at 2:00 p.m. Thurday, April 8th at Rooney Field.
