Lacrosse Defeats A-10 Leader Massachusetts 12-10

PITTSBURGH - Meghan Frederick scored a career-high 10 points and Kat McNish and Katie Rekart scored three times each to lead the Duquesne lacrosse team to a 12-10 win over conference leader Massachusetts 12-10 on Friday afternoon.
With the victory, the Dukes improve to 7-7 overall and 2-2 in the Atlantic 10 loop. The Minutewomen fall to 6-7 overall and 3-1 in A-10 play.
The match started with the teams exchanging goals - UMass got on the board first on a goal from Nina Sarcona at 28:37 and Duquesne countered with McNish setting up Frederick 1:12 later. UM's Jesse O'Donnell scored the first of her three goals before Riley Schamburg evened the score at 2-2 with a free position shot.
Frederick would give the Dukes its first lead of the match less than a minute later, but Jackie Lyons' goal at 19:47 tied the score for the third time in the contest at 3-3.
DU would score three straight goals - one from McNish and a pair from Rekart to take a 6-3 lead at the 8:26 mark of the half.
UMass would take advantage of two Duquesne yellow cards to score a pair of man-up goals making the score 6-5 with 6:33 to play in the first half.
The teams would exchange goals, McNish for Duquesne and Lauren Terracciano for Massachusetts, to send the match into halftime with DU up 7-6.
The Dukes started out the second half with a yellow card at the 27:14 mark, however, managed to scored a pair of goals, both by Frederick, to take a 9-6 lead.
With DU up 11-7, UMass scored two straight goals 48 seconds apart to close the gap to 11-9 with 15:49 to play.
Frederick added a huge insurance goal at the 8:07 mark and keeper Sarah Beckstead made some huge saves down the stretch to preserve the win for Duquesne.
The Dukes hit the road for a match versus Temple on Sunday. Start time is 1:00 p.m.
