Dukes Win in Triple Overtime at Saint Joseph's 8-7

April 13, 2007

Box Score

PHILADELPHIA, PA - Kathleen McNish's free position shot found the back of the net in the third, sudden victory overtime period and gave Duquesne (6-6, 1-1) an exciting 8-7 victory at Saint Joseph's Friday afternoon.

The Red & Blue, down 7-6, forced the extra periods when Meghan Frederick was able to squeeze the ball past Hawk's goalkeeper Suzy Herlihy with just 10 seconds left in regulation to send the game into overtime. Both teams registered four shots in the first two extra periods before McNish ended the game with 2:25 left in the third overtime.

The momentum of the game went back and forth with SJU taking an early 1-0 lead just 1:17 into the game. The Dukes took a 2-1 lead on goals from Sarah Carson and McNish. The Hawks (4-6, 0-3) scored the next three goals of the period to go ahead 4-2. A Sarah Cates goal with 3:04 remaing brought DU within one goal, 4-3, as the first half ended.

Cates tied the score at 4-4 on a free position shot at the 24:04 mark. Meg Cloutman gave Duquesne a 5-4 lead with 17:13 to play, but Saint Joseph's evened the score at 5-5 at 11:44. The Dukes regained the lead (6-5) 2:19 later on Frederick's first goal of the game. Two SJU goals in under two minutes gave the Hawks a 7-6 advantage until Frederick's second goal tied the score.

Caitlin Carducci had one of her best games of the season, playing all 74-plus minutes. She made nine saves. "Caitlin was definitely one of our top performers today," said head coach Mike Scerbo.

McNish led all scorers with four points. DU outshot SJU by a 27-21 margin. The Hawks had three more ground balls (11-8) than the Dukes.

Duquesne concludes their Philadelphia road trip Sunday afternoon at La Salle. Game starts at noon.
