Dukes Fall in Overtime to Number 10 UMass, 10-8

Duquesne's lacrosse team scored first and didn't trail in the game until overtime as the Dukes suffered a 10-8 loss to 10th-ranked UMass Friday afternoon at Rooney Field. The Dukes fell to 9-5 on the season and 2-2 in Atlantic 10 play while UMass improved to 13-1 overall and 4-0 in the A-10.
The Dukes set the tone early as Meredith Dunn scored off an Amanda Kidder assist five minutes into the contest for a 1-0 lead. The Red and Blue extended their lead to 4-1 on goals by Casey Denk, Haley Marafioti and Caitlin Prince and took a 4-2 lead into the half.
Dunn scored the first goal of the second half as well to extend the DU lead, before the Minutewomen rattled off three straight goals to knot the contest at 5-5. The teams exchanged the next three goals before Prince gave the Dukes an 8-6 advantage with 9:13 remaining, but UM scored twice in the final 2:17 of regulation to force OT and scored the only two goals in the extra period to secure the win.
Marafioti, Prince and Dunn each had two goals to lead the Duquesne offense while Jesse O'Donnell was the difference make for the Minutewomen, scoring all four of her goals after halftime.
Liz Walker was the story for the Dukes, making a career-high 18 saves to keep DU in the game. The Red and Blue were outshot 33-22, including a 19-9 disadvantage in the second half.
The Dukes will regroup as they head to Saint Joseph's for a 1:00 pm match Sunday afternoon.
