Duquesne women's lacrosse (9-6, 3-4) suffered an 11-5 loss to visiting Massachusetts (8-5, 4-1) Friday night on Rooney Field. Five Dukes scored on the night with Christi Madden, Laura App, Lauren Mincher, Kelly Mulford and Becca West each scoring. Ginger Flocco and West led the group with two assists each. Sarah Pacini went the distance in goal recording 14 saves.

Hope Zelinger led UMass with three goals and an assist.

The loss dampened the spirits of Senior Night for the Dukes 2003 Class - Kelly Fee, Christi Madden, Lauren Mincher and Carrie Watkins.

UMass hit the back of the cage at 28:58 on an unassisted goal from Zelinger before West found Madden in front of the cage to tie the game 1-1 with 26:19 ticking. The Dukes rallied hitting goals at 21:12 as Mincher scored from Flocco and 21:00 with West scoring from Katie Hohn for a 3-1 edge. The Minutewomen hit a score at 19:45 for a 2-3 reach before Flocco's give to App at 18:33 and West's assist to Mulford at 18:25 for a 5-2 advantage. UMass went on to score in the 11th minute then at 9L48 and 9:23 to knot the game at 5-5. Jade Emery's goal at 8:17 put the Minutewomen up 6-5, a lead they would take into the break.

The Dukes faces tough defense in the second frame forcing shots to go mostly wide while UMass found the back of the cage in the 19th, 14th, 10th and 6th minutes for a 10-5 lead before the final goal of the night in at 2:38 for the 11-5 final. Pacini recorded eight of her 14 saves in the second frame facing 17 UMass shots.

 

 

Duquesne closes out its 2003 regular season next Thursday as it hosts #9 Ohio State in a 7:00 pm contest.
