Lacrosse Clinches Third Place in Atlantic 10 Championship After 11-10 Win at UMass

AMHERST - Kat McNish's goal with 13 seconds remaining in regulation broke a 10-10 tie and gave Duquesne a thrilling win over Massachusetts, their fourth consecutive, and clinched a No.3 seed in the 2008 Atlantic 10 Championship.
The Dukes (8-8, 5-2) will return to Amherst Friday to take on No. 2 seed Temple at 3:30 p.m.
Ashley Wood led DU with a game-high six points and McNish extended her scoring streak to 15 games. Caitlin Carducci made a game-best 12 saves.
Wood got the Dukes on the board less than two minutes into the match on a goal from Sarah Carson. UMass quickly tie the score, but Carson's 19th goal of the season at 21:34 gave DU a 2-1 advantage.
Duquesne regained the lead on Wood's second goal of the afternoon, but the Minutewomen would score two consecutive goal to take a 4-3 lead. McNish would tie the score with 3:16 remaining to close out the first half scoring.
DU and UMass would trade goals to begin the second half. Massachusetts opened the scoring 1:44 into the half. Shannon Hadaway's goal would tie the score at 5-5 before the Minutewomen would regain the lead 1:28 later.
The score would stayed tied at 6-6 for over seven minutes after a Sarah Cates goal. UMass would take their fourth lead of the match at 16:32, before back-to-back goals from Janna Faulkner and Keri Drexel gave the Dukes their first lead of the second half, 8-7.
The Minutewomen would score consecutive goals 66 seconds apart, to take a 9-8 advantage. Wood's third goal tied the score, but UMass would take the lead 22 seconds later 10-9.
Wood's fourth goal of the afternoon deadlocked the contest at 10-10 with 2:04 remaining.

Cates won the ensuing draw control and the Dukes ran down the clock. With 13 second remaining, Wood set up McNish, who found the back of the net to give Duquesne the 11-10 victory.
